Upper Kentucky Falls drops gracefully through Siuslaw National Forest in the Oregon Coast Range near Florence on a warm summer afternoon. After spending hours on a wild goose chase down overgrown mountain roads (thanks Google Maps!) I finally made it to the Kentucky Falls Trail. My car, now thoroughly decorated with “Oregon pin striping” from all of the brush, sat all alone at the trailhead. Total solitude at Upper Kentucky Falls was my sweet reward after that harrowing journey, tucked deep in a really beautiful area of forest with golden afternoon sunlight filtering through the thick canopy of spruce and hemlock. Of the three falls on this trail, all of which I had completely to myself, this one stole the show with it’s graceful form and gorgeous setting. This beauty is number one on my list of waterfalls I plan to return to earlier in the season when the flow is stronger.
