Description
Lost in a lush and ferny woods in Glen Creran, The aptly-named Fairy Bridge is as straight-from-a-fairytale as you can find. Being there in the evening alone felt like entering a forbidden place, that “maybe we shouldn’t be here” feeling. I remember walking around as quietly as I could and talking softly to my husband, like I didn’t want to disturb anything. It’s easy to imagine a little troll living under the there!
The bridge was likely built in the 16th century – you see a lot of stone walls built around that time with the thin plates of rocks pointing up like the bridge has. The construction style certainly conveys a fantasy feeling! It is both skinny and steep on the sides so I imagine no carts were able to cross, only people on foot and single-file horses.
Finding The Fairy Bridge in Glen Creran was a fantastic adventure through the misty evening forest in Scotland’s incredible West Highlands of Argyll which is well off the beaten path. The sun was low and the clouds were thick, occasionally showering the greenery and us as we explored. It definitely felt like we were entering the realm of the Fey. We parked probably where we won’t supposed to and took a sometimes boggy boot path up past a ruined structure followed by a decently tall waterfall to the bridge hidden in the woods. By the time I got down onto the creekbed rocks and found this angle it was 9:30 in the evening and getting fairly dark, so the exposure is quite long – 15 seconds. I am so grateful that the breeze stayed calm so the shot came out clear! After a tree branch fell not far from me we headed quickly back down in the gathering dusk, lingering for just a moment when we discovered a large patch of ripe bilberries.
I offer select photographs, those right-place-right-time images that really shine, as Limited Edition prints. Only 25 prints of this image will be produced (regardless of chosen media or print size), after which the image will become unavailable.
