I was five and living about 300-miles away the morning that Mt St Helens erupted, blowing off the entire top of the peak in the largest and most violent eruption in the US in modern memory. I still remember waking up to find ash on our car and roof. Today the mountain looms over my city as it builds another peak inside the massive crater on it’s northwest side. The intricate swirls of snow viewed here on the backside of the mountain near Ape Caves make the peak appear pretty and picturesque, but a fire burns within her which will someday burst forth again.
