Autumn scenes like this one at Ponytail Falls in the Columbia River Gorge will only get better in coming years as bigleaf and vine maple trees regrow quickly to fill the vacant space left behind by the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire. Ponytail Falls is beautiful all times of year, but the surrounding forest puts on quite a golden show in early November. Protected pockets like this hold onto their fall color longer than more exposed sites in the area where the persistent wind quickly denudes the branches.
