North Falls in Silver Falls State Park is one of the most epic and photogenic waterfalls in the Pacific Northwest. The huge cave-like overhang which the trail passes through amplifies the jet engine sounds produced by the rushing stream landing on huge boulders in the canyon below. It really is a unique experience!

Silver Falls is only about an hour from my work, so I’ve rushed down to the park in the late afternoon many times, often arriving just as the sun in setting. This shot is from one of my first trips in 2022. I’ve seen it in all season and various lighting conditions, but the softness of the twilight and the abundant fall color give this photo that dark autumn sense that I feel every year as winter approaches.
