It was a gorgeous spring afternoon in May 2023 when my husband and I ventured into the eastern Columbia River Gorge to see the annual wildflower display. After visiting popular Rowena Crest we decided to hike up the Mosier Plateau Trail to check out the waterfall, a sight we had never seen before. As we came hiking back down the trail, fully satisfied with our beautiful adventure, we discovered that Mother Nature had one more gorgeous wonder for us to behold – the sun setting behind this gnarled old Oregon oak, with light catching in the leaves and fresh spring grass. The rolling green hills dotted with trees led the imagination to scenes of The Shire from Tolkein’s Lord Of The Rings. I’ve always loved oaks, having grown up surrounded by their twisting forms in the Rogue Valley, where oaks are quite prolific. They have a real sense of wisdom to them, and this specimen is certainly no exception. Ultimately the photograph I took of this amazing moment became an award-winning image, earning the grand prize in Friends Of Columbia Gorge 2024 “Gorge Gram” Photo Contest, beating out over one thousand other images.
