Light from a window above bathes soft, cold light onto the skillfully carved effigies of George Campbell and his wife Ina MacNeill. George Campbell became the 8th Duke of Argyll, Scotland and was widely considered to be one of the most gifted thinkers of the 19th century, en par with figures like Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson before him. In the 1870s he led the charge to restore famous Iona Abbey which had been the birthplace and religious heart of Christianity in Scotland centuries earlier. Today these effigies lie inside the west transept of the main chapel at the abbey he helped preserve.
