Description

185-foot Horsetail Falls slides down a mossy cliff in the Columbia River Gorge in mid-June 2022. A wet spring that year kept the creek full and the moss lush. I normally do long exposures of waterfalls to get that smooth, flowing appearance in my photographs, but Horsetail Falls is one that looks incredible at quick shutter speeds as well. The force of the water was creating a lot of air movement and rustling the leaves in the adjacent bigleaf maple and surrounding shrubs, making a short exposure necessary to produce a clear image. I love the little waves in the pool, which would have been lost in a longer shot.
