Emerald slopes rise from the side of Glen Nevis up to Ben Nevis, Scotland’s highest peak, with its summit lost in the clouds. This right here is quintessential Scotland in summer: foxgloves and heather blooming in the meadows and a few sheep grazing here and there near the lazy stream, when the entire countryside is coated in green with a swirling blanket of clouds above creating pools of light and patches of shadow that dance eternally across the rugged landscape.

I woke up early to hike to Steall Waterfall at the top end of the glen, driving past this gorgeous roadside view en route. Later that morning I returned with my husband, who had opted to enjoy a few more hours of sleep rather than venturing out into the misty morning with me at 6AM, after we tried to visit the now-famous Glenfinnian Viaduct nearby but were turned away because the giant parking area was full. We spent the late morning exploring the glen, stopping at several incredible viewpoints and exploring some short trails near Lower Falls a few miles up the valley from this point. The light at the top end of the glen with the dark clouds obscuring the peaks came together beautifully in this moment.
