Lone Pine

Description
I’ve photographed the sun setting behind this intricately sculpted little shore pine in Ecola State Park several times because it is just so ridiculously picturesque. Getting to this spot involves a bit of clambering up an eroding slope and along a little ridgeline path to get the right angle. This is one of my first shots of this strong specimen and it will always be one of my favorites. This tree defines both solitude and endurance – standing alone on the point of a large monolith which towers 25 feet over the normally empty beach, rooting down into the cracks in the rock, with no protection from the winter storms that batter the Oregon Coast. I hope it lives for a thousand years.
