Scotland’s A82 is one of the most beautiful highways I have ever driven. It winds from Glasgow to Inverness, passing both Scotland’s largest loch, Loch Lomond, and legendary Loch Ness. But the most incredible part is when you climb up into the West Highlands, passing waterfalls and forested slopes before emerging on stunning Rannoch Moor. Verdant windswept moors dotted with heather stretch away for miles, with green mountains rising in all directions in the distance. Loch Ba is a vast system of waterways and ponds which weave through the lonely moorlands, with two separate larger lake areas connected by meandering channels which break the land up into islands.
My husband and I honestly could not believe our eyes when we reached the moor, with the gathering clouds creating shifting beams of light. We pulled over at a few different turnouts along the highway and ran around taking pictures in every direction. This view is near Loch Ba Bridge. We liked this spot in particular because the terrain rolled a bit more and the one tree in the distance made a perfect focal point. I half expected a unicorn to come prancing over the hill, emerging in a glimmering pool of sunlight – they are a symbol of Scotland for a reason after all. What an absolutely magical place! I will never forget this moment.
