Mt Mauarua is one of the most dramatic and iconic peaks in French Polynesia. It rises like a rocky temple above the verdant fields and forests of Opunohu Valley on the island of Moorea. Local stories say that the pointy peak is so striking that it was James A. Michener’s inspiration for the mythical island “Bali Hai” in his novel Tales Of The South Pacific.
